National Media Council Begins Work

MONROVIA, June 15 (LINA) - The National Media Council of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) Thursday kicked off hearings into complaints of ethical transgression with the Office of House Speaker, Emmanuel J. Nuquay taking up New Dawn’s Emmanuel Mondaye for alleged defamation.

The hearings were held at the PUL’s Headquarters on Clay Street in Monrovia, with seven of nine members in attendance.    

The Council was established in November 2016 to guarantee compliance with the Code of Ethics for Liberian journalists through contents on multiple media platforms; respect the right to freedom of expression and information and adopt measures that are proportionate and necessary in order to redress violation of the Code.

Speaker Nuquay, through his Chief of Office Staff, Eric Kennedy, alleged that the New Dawn Newspaper’s publication caused injury to his character.

Following a review of all supporting documents as presented by the Speaker’s Chief of Office Staff, the Council suspended hearings into the matter on grounds that the Speaker’s complaint should either be signed by himself or give his Chief of Office Staff, Power of Attorney to proxy on his behalf.

At the same time, the National Media Council is advising the public to put forth all supporting documents whenever a media related-complaint is being sent to the Council for hearing and/or redress.

The Council is also requesting the public to report all ethical issues to it for redress and cautioned practicing journalists to take the PUL Revised Code of Ethics as a guide during the discharge of their duties.
